Unneccesary Pomp?

In Great Britain they're taking a vote in Parliament today to do with the outdoing of some long-standing ceremonial tradiitions as to the opening of the House. I for one think that such traditions must remain a part of the British culture, even though the monarchy may need to be cut back quite a bit.

But what about us? I'm sure if someone drew up a report analysing defence dollars we'd find, presumably like any other state, that a great deal of our budget goes into parades, honour guards, and ceremony after ceremony. Some are certainly neccesary, ie Remembrance Day, but, do we really need as many bands as we have, do we really need to spend so much money on providing civillians with a pretty picture, or diplomats with a feeling of grandeur?

Just something we can chew the bone over.

Clarior Hinc Honos.
