I can't disagree with you Andy. Your description of some bandsman is very accurate and I have seen these people you describe. However, I don't see that as a total reason to toss out what little pomp and ceremony we have, which is very little these days. (Don't they have some sort of standard of physical fitness for bandsmen(persons?)
As for following the British model you describe, I don't know if that is possible considering how stretched units are now for resources.
My point was that I don't believe that we spend much of our budget on pomp and ceremony.
