I can not imagine an army without pomp and pageantry. It instills pride and honour it gives the soldier a chance to strut his stuff. But with that said you are right in that we do waste money on some parades and ceremonies that are not necessary and we do have some Neanderthal traditions considering the century we live in. However I do believe we need more bands (We only have three recognized Regular Force Bands) and from my 21 years experience they are not all fat as a matter of fact some of them could put some of our regular and reserve combat arms soldiers in their place. So before some journalist gets a hold of this and make it a national debate by deciding to destroy the little bit of tradition we have left, just imagine a remembrance day parade with out a last post or a parade with out a bass drum. And don't give the speech that we have cadets or that we can contract it out that just don't cut it when you're in some armpit country.
Parades and ceremonies are full of traditions and maybe we should spend more time learning about our past so as to recognize today's faults i.e. why do we have 1 CWO for every 100 soldiers, is that not as bad as to many generals.

Signed
Combat Arms
