Your ideas about an "untouchable" CDS is a non-starter. In a democracy like Canada, the CDS, just like any other soldier, sailor or air personnel, has a boss. That boss is the Minister of National Defence. There is no getting around that. There may be nuances available, like make him directly responsible to the Prime Minister, or Cabinet, or the Governor General, but they amount to the same thing. The military is under civilian control. It's the same in all other democracies. It's the way it works. It's the law. The National Defence Act is passed by our Parliament and it spells out the necessary responsibilities.

Many people on this means think that doing what the government wants is a bad thing. Get real. They are elected by us and if we don't like what they are doing, a majority of Canadians can cause a change. To expect otherwise is just not realistic.

For those who criticise officers as being politicians, I suspect they have been neither and therefore are not qualified to speak with authority. The only officers whose work has true political implications are the senior officers (some Colonels and most Generals) in NDHQ. Although other officers work for them, the senior officers are responsible. This is expected and normal. It is the same in most modern countries and their military. Note the distinction though, I said their work has political implications, not that they work in politics. Look at what NATO Generals are doing now. Senior officers have never been absolutely isolated from political implications at any time in military history. Nor will they be.

If you still think that all officers are careerists you either have not been watching very closely or you have no experience....or both. I'll bet you have no valid examples.

Further, the CF justice system has just undergone an extensive revision. There are many that say it has been too modified, but it now reflects all the "checks and balances" found in the Canadian justice system and to which every citizen is entitled. By the way, we have no juries in the military justice system. When you learn what it really is all about, then maybe you can suggest something.
