I can appreciate the comments made by the previous author - I'd like to point out that in my years in uniform I personally witnessed the actions of careerist officers (and some senior NCM's for that matter) that actually sickened me. Most cases were simply becuase they could. Perfect example - and i will testify to this under oath - having seen it in writing - a General tells LCol to convene a summary court-martial for a subordinate Captain who was negligent. The LCol - after receiving the written directive - writes as a minute - that he will handle the situation with internal discipline as he has no intention of besmirching the reputation of a fine officer or his regiment. It helped the LCol that the General making the order was leaving within a matter of weeks. Final outcome - Captain is promoted and LCol gets posted and promoted to Military attache. This is one of many examples - and careerism is the word for this. these officers (so-called) be they 2lt's or Generals - care little for the principles of leadership and worry more about self-promotion and advancement. The system itself is now designed to reflect management practices, not leadership - which in the business world may be acceptable (but it isn't - it's just that leadership is rare) while the military should foster Leadership - not best use of resources. One doesn't have to have been an officer in order to recognize an incompetent or incapable officer - one only has to serve under one. The fallacy is that officer's tend to believe that only one who was an officer can understand their duties and responsibilites. When i was in the Forces, i was better educated, better read and had a better grasp of the situations we had to deal with than the Lt who was appointed over me. I made sure i served to the best of my ability and protected my CO from errors which could cause all difficulties - that was my job as Coy clk. nevertheless, the fact of the matter was my Lt couldn't lead a horse to water because he was more interested in making sure he was advanced, recognized and promoted - despite the fact he could barely read or write (yes functional illiteracy does exist within the Forces) and he made sure his troops knew his priority. it wasn't the troops. That, gentlemen and ladies, is a definition of careerism.
