My list of suggestions? After talking it over with
several buddies of mine who had been in the forces, I
came up with the following ideas:
1)One problem with the officers that is repeated over
and over again is the point that they are more interested
in protecting career advancement than providing leadership.
The root of this problem is the fact that the politicians
control the military at the highest level. A good way
to change this while maintaining the proper "checks and
balances" would be to make the CDS "untouchable" by
politicians. Make the position a set term and the only
way he can be fired is by getting the Supreme Court of
Canada to agree to it. That would allow the CDS to be
free to speak thier mind without fear of losing thier job.
Once you have a boss who CAN protect you from political
interference, the officers will be less afraid for thier
careers.
2)The military justice system is also in need of severe
reform. We need enlisted men sitting on juries(You know,
a jury of your PEERS...) among many other things.
This is because the officers have found that they can
get away with certain activites without having to own
up to them. A proper, unbiased and transparent military
judicial system would force officers to take responsibility for both
their actions(AND inaction!).
Any other suggestions?
