a)Where to start cutting? How about the artillery? Since this branch of the combat arms is only deployed with it's guns during war, we could convert all artillery into a reserve responsibility. By getting rid of the reg force artillery, we could eliminate the bulk of it's officers(And the costs they incur.). The enlisted members could then be amalgamated into the infantry command structure, increasing the amount of personnel they would have available for UN missions. This would also fit nicely with the proposed idea of converting the reserves into support roles only. By giving the reserves a token combat arms role, they maintain a semblance of pride. Each region could have a live fire range with one fixed battery for training purposes. What do you think?

b)Since Gunner has made it clear that Canada has no threats to it's national security, we won't ever need to fight a war again, so why do we need a reg force artillery? This is sort of a continuation of the last point

c)Moving on, yes, I was being humorous about the "media war". But don't kid yourself on some of those points. EVERY war is fought in this day age with all sides of a conflict keeping a close eye on how CNN portrays them. Look at the Brits. They fought the Falklands in 1982 and are still getting mileage at budget time for it(As evidenced by the shiny new Ocean class helo assault carrier. This is a purpose built vessel to invade small islands far away from friendly bases. Sound familiar?). Despite my sympathy for all those killed and injured(I think we've all had friends and relatives injured and killed on UN missions.), war (or peacekeeping) is simply a political exercise. While sometimes the political goals are laudable(World War 2), often they are not(Gulf War, Vietnam). But war is always simply a political tool.
