You make a good point about "older" soldiers and their prejudices. As the years go by and more and more soldiers join an army that has a large proportion of females in it from the start, things will get easier. In WW II, blacks still faced a lot of harsh prejudices, but today, they serve alongside whites with no distinctions made. I've served for 13 years and have never, ever heard the word "nigger", not even as a joke. I am in a Highland regiment, and the Asians, hispanics, blacks and other racial minorities wear the kilt with as much pride as anyone else, and no one even notices things like that anymore. They are Highlanders.

Some day, it will be the same with women (it already is in my Regiment, though we are "only" reservists). The old timers will retire, and more accepting people will take their place. It's like Communism in the Soviet Union - it was bound to die out eventually because the outmoded ideals just couldn't support themselves any more.

This is all providing, of course, that women behave themselves and continue to meet training standards. They will not get a free ride - as you know - and I know that no self-respecting woman will ever expect one. I've worked with a lot of cool ladies in the Forces in my time, and the best ones have all worked as hard as the men and expected no special treatment. The ones that do expect that treatment, or try to get ahead by flirting with superiors, etc. - they don't last long.

Unfortunately, these things take time.
