Merchant Marine...not Navy

Call me insensitive, but I don't put Merchies on the same footing as Navy sailors. They never had to wear a uniform, service discipline did not apply to them, and they could quit wherever, whenever they wanted to. They were usefull, perhaps even vital, to the war effort, but they were not warriors.
Why should we denigrate the Navy vets by putting the Merchant Navy on the same footing as them? Sure, they were torpedoed, shot at etc, bit that does not make them soldiers. Has anyone proposed that the civilians of London or Dresden be considered as veterans? They also were bombed and shot at.
My two cents worth...
