Hello all.

I have just recently decided that I will try and join the forces this time next year when I finish school. I was wondering if some of you could answer a few questions that I had. I have posted some questions on other disscussion boards and have recieved limited answers.

Here we go:

1. How easy is it to get into the field eng. position. I think that I have the education with a Mech Eng. Technologist diploma and receiving another in Metallurgy this time next year. Is there a waiting period to get into any position within the forces?

2. How "in shape" do you have to be? I'm no iron man but I think that I can hold my own. Very good strenght but not too good with the running (10 min mile). As for sit -ups I think they ask for 15 /min is that with someone holding your feet?

3. I once saw a feature on the Canadian combat divers (Dolphins??) which are similar to the Navy seals. If I do get into a field eng. position is there any chance to do diving or will I have to go for the above team.

4. Can anyone give me a personal run through of what is entailed in the position. I have read the description on the website but I would like to get a first hand description.

5. Does anyone know of a website that describes the BT that is done in the CAF? I have ready many about the USA army, is there BT similar to Canada's?

Are you intrested in joining as an officer or as an NCM? As an NCM, no prior construction or egineering experience is required. Officers would require a degree in Engineering (preferably Civil) or a physical science (but any Engineering is preffered for obvious reasons).

If you are intrested in using your education, you may want to consider EME.

Thanks for the info:

I have looked at the EME but I don't think its my #1 choice. Plus I don't have the University degree to be an Officer therefore I will enlist as a NCM. I only have the College diplomas.

When you become a combat Eng is there a time where you become speciallized in a certain field of work?

As a mech eng technologist and particularly with the metallurgy specialty, you would draw someone's attention in the EME world. It would be ideal if you could get your PEng certification before applying - might help you get over the degree requirement. Do you have the work experience to do that?

If not, and if EME interests you, the most obvious career choice would be as a Mat Tech. Welder, carpenter, body & paint, metal worker, etc. 75% of it is welding though, and you would have the theory done to a "T".

The armour world might also be interested in your metallurgy background.

Finally, you might find a civvy position with DND that makes the most of your education, and a reserve position that addresses your tactical/combat/"army"/non-technical interests.

Anyone want to specualte on whether this background is going to help accelerate through the ranks to a Sr NCM or WO level where it might actually be put to good use?

I wouldn't be able to get the PEng designation but hopefully I will have a C.E.T. (Certified Engineering Technologist) by the time I'm done.

I have the work experience currently I'm working for an parts supplier for the auto industry in the Test Eng. dept. I'm fast finding out that office work is not for me. I want to be in the open air (corny but I think I'm too young to waste a way in an office).

Is field Eng. the only type of engineering position that still has combat capabilities? EME seems like the job that I'm doing right now, very good work but not for me at this point in my life

I know that my background doesn't match that of field Eng. but I think that it would be amazing work. Does anyone know if you could visit a base to see what the living/working conditions are like. I live near London Ont. I think that Pettawa is close to home and I have a cottage near Meaford but wasn't sure if you could tour?

The Field Engineers are the only Engineers in the Combat Arms.

If you are intrested in seeing what being a Feild Engineer is about, you could make a visit to the St Thomas Armoury on a Thursday evening. There are plenty of people around who can point you in the direction of our recruiting NCO. If you don't mind the trip from Woodstock you may want to consider joining for a year to see what things are all about. (I knew a guy who would commute from Kingston to Ottawa so he could be with the Engineers.)

Guy's if you realy want it and have a degree I suggets go in to the rank's for three year's then become an oficer as men who have come from the rank's on average make bloody good officer's, than some bloody ringer from RMC etc.
As a lot of us know you have to walk in the shoe's !
