Seeking Advanced Squad Leader players

Howdy.
Tactical wargames, the kind played on tables and not on computers, appeal to me to the point that I've invested several hundreds of dollars in them, primarily into the Advanced Squad Leader system.

That said, do you play ASL?  If not; why not? ;D

I was playing starter kit 1 and 3 until my partner in crime got posted to Ottawa. Great game.  I suspect that me and him were messing up the rules here and there though as we were completely reliant on the rule book.  Those vehicle rules could really get you sometimes.

I really wanted to get into the off board artillery and the fog of war rules but they weren't in the 3rd starter kit.

Now, there is a way to play via Internet.  Using a program (freeware) called "Virtual Advanced Squad Leader" (VASL), you can play in real time or even via email.  It uses a base program called VASSAL (http://www.vassalengine.org), and then you get the ASL "mod" (http://vasl.info). 
Best way to learn?  Play.  If you want to try it online sometime, shoot me an IM.

There are a limited number of people that have the time or focus to play a board based wargame.

How similar is it to TacOps? I've played around with that a bunch. And I say play, because controlling anything beyond a small team/section was never something I experienced in my career. I'm going to look into it a bit though, I've never heard of it before.

It's appealing that these type of games can now be played online, but I'm sure it could be good in person too. I wonder if anyone in the NCR or Ottawa Valley plays? I'm sure if they modernized Risk and called it Risk Management, there would be some players here...  :nod:

Yes, there is quite an active ASL group there, and in fact, next year's Canadian Advanced Squad Leader Open (CASLO) will be in Ottawa.

I've only had three matches so far this month.  I'll be at Albany at the end of the month, but I'm used to 10 a month (about half online using VASL)
