The humanitarian effort to move 100,000 people from the refugee camps on the Kosovo/Macedonian border is a massive undertaking but I have to ask why the Canadians are only taking 5000?

We have resources that far outstrip our other NATO confreres when it comes to housing and support. We can take 10000 in Toronto, 10000 in Montreal, 10000 in Halifax and at least that many in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary and Regina. We have the room if not the resources in place for thousands more (we could do the same for our homeless population but that is not an expediant political topic at the present time.) We are going to uproot, transport and feed, cloth and house a significant popuplation whos' only crime is to be different from the ones with the guns.

Germany has promised to take 40000, the USA another 20000 but that many move into the camps everyday. Would it not be prudent to ship the aid where it is needed rather than ship the population to a strange land where no one speaks your language and you become a prisoner of your own ignorance?

It would appear that the 2500 refugees that are soon to be living in base Borden are to meet up with some real fine people if the hospitality section has anything to say about it but I fear repercussions are going to be felt for a long time to come.

How many people does it take to look after 2500 strangers that don't speak English or French? I guess that this summer will prove to be an interesting one for anyone in the military in southern Ontario.

All the Best
