I don't want to comment on Stopford because I don't know him.

However, I do want to respond - yes it is criminal to poison a superior. I do believe, however, that there are times where the chain of command does not work. I was under a CWO for many years who was incompetent and callous, who played games with the careers of his men, but who , because he excelled at admin and schmoozing, was able to keep his i's dotted t's crossed when it came to relating to the chain of command. Redress of grievances filed about him to the CO were ignored. To a 18 year old trooper, the chain is very daunting.

We do have the ombudsman in this day and age - but when you are in Croatia, how do you write to him, your MP, espirit de corps - none of that matters - you are in theatre and you are forced to work under someone who maybe doesn't care if you live or die. Sometimes the chain doesn't work, and it is as plain as that.

I am not saying it is right, I am saying that you shouldn't be so incredulous - it CAN happen, it HAS happened, and it WILL happen. Especially if the superior in question covers his tracks.

My CWO did nothing technically wrong - you had to be in the unit to understand - the favouritism he acted on, the manner in which he wrote bad PERs on those he did not like, or who knew more than he...all that he did could be disguised as efficiency. Luckily his pedophilia got him dismissed from the service before they gave him the MMM - or before he got someone maimed or killed.
