I think one needs to be careful of being wary of American practices simply out of spite. Even if they did start this Unknown Soldier thing (and I suspect they didn't, actually) - so what? It's a great idea. Surely the Americans do SOME things right. Everyone cracks on their army for their reliance on firepower, for example. They point to the ridiculous amounts of ordnance tonnage expended during Vietnam in comparison to the number of enemy casualties. They forget Canada's policy in the Wars, where possible, was "use guns instead of men." Not a bad policy if you can afford it.

As for Canadian kids having respect - I agree that our troops earned the right to be buried overseas. It's just too bad more Canadian kids don't get the chance to visit them. I've never been over there myself. It must be a humbling experience. Maybe one day our Government will pay for all kids to go over and do that - I can think of worse things they've done with OUR money.
