Mandatory national service is an intruiging idea, especially if it includes areas other than purely military. If done PROPERLY and INTELLIGENTLY (a big change for the current goverment), I think it could work in Canada. If such an endeavour were to be undertaken, I think a study of nations that have successfully implemented such a system in peacetime (Israel, Greece, Switzerland, South Korea, and some others) would be highly advantageous. One problem that would arise though, is that these nations have used such a system in response to a military threat, and Canada dosen't have any military threats. Switzerland would be a good system to look into, as they have a very successful and almost complete fusion between military and civilian societies. I would support a system of ntional service, even if purely military, but ONLY IF military service outside Canada was 100% voluntary. It would certainly wip into shape most of the deadbeats in society, and clean up the nation as a whole.Martin
