In their book TUG OF WAR, by Denis and Shelagh Whitaker, the authors make a convincing argument that the 'artificial' halt to the Canadian advance, which occurred on Tuesday, September 5th, 1944 ('Dolle Dinsdag', or 'Crazy Tuesday'), could well have been responsible for the debacle at Arnhem, as well as for the excessive cost and duration of the Scheldt battles. They maintain that German resistance at that time was ineffective enough for our leading units to have made it as far as the Rhine within a few days of reaching Antwerp. Had they done so, the remaining German forces in Belgium would have been bottled up to be destroyed piecemeal, and there would have been no reinforcement of the Breskens, Walcheren and South Beveland garrisons. In addition, there would have been no necessity for MARKET-GARDEN, other than for reinforcement of our advance.Your comments?
