Hello All,

With the Conference of Defence Associations recent publication, it has been proposed that the strength of the Canadian Armed Forces be expanded up to 75,000 troops in light of the recent terrorist attacks and habitual neglect by previous governments.
With this in mind. How do you feel that the infantry should address this? I know that manpower levels in the existing Regular Force units are already below desired manning levels. But to address the idea of "expansion", would bringing back old regiments to the Regular Force Order of Battle be the way to go?! Or should we add more companies to the existing Regular Force infantry battalions?

Correct me if I am wrong, but aren't our nine current regular force battalions all undermanned according to our TO&E;? I would think this would be the first issue we would address if we were talking about expanding the infantry.

Infanteer,

You're right in your assumption the 9 Reg Force battalions are undermanned. What the CDA is proposing is obviously make-up that shortfall, but at the same time go about it with a two pronged attack. Meaning fill in the holes and expand at the same time.

Let's see...

When I joined my first battalion, there were 85,000 plus in the CF, and there were about 300 of us on the ground in the unit.

Somehow, I don't think an "expansion" back to 75,000 will require any new capbadges.

The first priority should be to bring the Regiments up to full strength, meaning bring back the 4th Rifle Coys that were disbanded in the late 90's.Once the Regiments are up to strength then the option of bringing units back on the Active Roster could be considered .But which unit should it be,The Canadian Guards,Blackwatch,or QOR I can imagine the in-fighting that would take place then!!!!! Where would these resurrected units be based???No doubt at least one would wind in Ontario and another in Quebec,is Western Canada an option place the Rocky Mountain Ranges back on the Regular Force list??????????

In order to expand, you need people. This means volunteers, and if there are no volunteers? guess the draft will have to be brought back.

The trouble as I see it is this: Ther is no patriotism in this country. Ask people and they will tell you they are everything except Canadian. If you are a citizen either naturalized or nationalized then you are a Canadian above all else. The US has the right idea.

And the must stop with the idea to eliminate Pioneers and Mortar from the Infantry. Army expansion should include increased special forces discused on this site.

Why do the infantry think they are the only trade in the Forces. It is not called combined armes team for nothing.

Even though a massive increase in defence spending is a pipe dream why would there be a consideration of increasing infantry bns when the Arty and Armoured have lost regiments and Bty/Sqd in recent memory. This is not to mention the Engineers and CSS.

RCA,
Bang on! The Blue jobs could probably use about 60 or so more fighter pilots for the parked CF-18's and the Navy needs to man about 10 more ships tied up in dock for lack of pers. Not to mention ........

To get people in will never happen now, you have to start with the small kids and educate them about our history and the battles and wars.
It starts at school, maybe its our teachers or our education system at the history level thats at fault,
I remember in my history class how the teacher would talk in great detail about the famous battles that made Canada and how we kicked *** everywhere, made me feel proud, same in the states but more so.
Now will never happen but the future will if there is one for the army.
