Those who enforce otherwise good rules to stupid extremes are generally known as Regular Army Clowns. Making a comment in passing abuot an individual who ran for public office, and not using his FORMER rank, is not a show of unprofessionalism. Expecting soldiers to walk around in the civilian world and tell women who ask them for the time that it is "seventeen hundred hours" is the same sort of silliness you propose. It was said that the problem with Canadian Generals in WWII is that they never called each other by their first names. The British, on the other hand (at least the good ones) always knew their subordinates and peers by their first names. As for subordinates calling generals by name - obviously a no-no, at least face to face. Referring to him in passing with his full rank, appointment, and decorations is plain moronic.
