Mr. Dorosh- while you are right that one of the best generals available to the allied forces in WW1 was Lt Gen Sir Arthur Currie, he was in fact Canadian and began his militia career in Victoria in the 5th Artillery (the ancestor of my unit, the 5th (BC) Field Regiment, RCA) and rose to become the commander of the Canadian Corps after several sucessful campaigns including command of 1Cdn Div at Vimy.

The German Army rated two generals as being the best they faced in Normandy, one was General Rockingham (a Seaforth and UBC Prof before the war) and General Hoffmeister (another militia soldier). When Canada committed the Special Service Force to Korea, they begged Gen Rockingham to come out of retirement (back teaching at UBC) to lead the contingent.
