Why don't soldiers sweep parade squares as defaulters anymore? The parade square at Mewata is disgustingly filthy - but cleaning it isn't done by naughty soldiers, it's done by cleaning staff on a semi-regular basis. Guess it's not fair to keep guys after dismissal for things like that, right? Not a good means to retention either. Too bad. Fifty years ago you could have gotten away with it. But is it a bad thing?

We did pushups on my Driver Wheeled course a few years ago, not just on my basic (we only had to do them once, though). I don't know that it will teach anyone anything, more like a Pavlovian reaction to not getting in trouble. Not so sure that's the way to go - get soldiers thinking about why and what they are doing, not teach them to react to physical disciplining. If you're not fit enough to do a 13 km ruck march, I don't think 10 minutes of pushups is going to help you in that regard.

Above all, I agree - retain the ability to do your job. But for the guys with bad teeth, poor eyesight, etc., - surely there are jobs for them away from the sharp end that they can do, while the able bodied ply their trade up front?
