Unfortunatly, the field portion is highly subjective and open to the interpretation of the DS. I've had it happen while on a CC course that a position you take up one day is the same as the day before and suddenly you've over extended your bound by 200m and are past effective covering fire. Or the same thing during a section attack. Attack the same position twice with two seperate DS and one will tell you "great" the other will say "you're dead".

Sadly, the only true method to tell whether it truely "worked" or not is to have buddy in the trench shooting at you but that's not gonna happen on course. MILES gear goes a long way to helping out on this but is still far from perfect.
