PSAC strike

In Halifax, for the past two weeks our PSAC workers have been rotating their picket-lines from Monday through Wednesday at various military locations within the city. If I understand correctly, they are demanding wage parity with PSAC in Western Canada--where a carpenter earns $3 > per hour more than his/her Eastern PSAC counterpart. My questions:

1) Aren't overall living expenses higher in B.C. & Alberta than in N.B. & N.S. ?

2) If so (it's axiomatic, huh?), how does the fight for wage equity on a national level seek to gain strength from such a flawed and weak argument?

My statements:

1) I would prefer (if I ever had the option) not to affiliate myself with a union.

2) I'll obey my SSM in that: I would pass through picket lines without incident, even though a couple of the picketers are guys that work with our crew... and enjoy hamming things up a bit just for a laugh--meanwhile, the soldiers still gotta get cracking early, as always. I'll keep from flipping the bird to the gents as I idle-by in my overheating '87 jalopy, because all is well--they let me pass. Finally!

Just wanted to share a bit of what is, in reality, quite uncommon here in Halifax since the strike action, but seems to be somewhat of a circular pursuit on PSAC's part. Any opinions?
