Sapper: Regarding the ranks of the different units in the army. When I was in the Armoured Corps my rank was Trooper, The Artillery private soldier was called a gunner and their corporals were called bombadiers. A private soldier in the Airborne Regiment was called a trooper and might still be in the Jump Companies of the Infantry Regts., now. The Engineers were called Sappers, and that stood for the private soldier also. They were official names and I belive still are. If thety aren't, it's another screw up by the powers that be, in my opinion. If you remember during the Vietnam era, the enemy troops that mined and blew up the wire around compounds, were also called Sappers. Another four cents.
