The term actually has its origins much earlier than WW I. It isderived from the French word/verb for trenching/tunnelling, and has been used in the Engineers for many years going back to at least the Napeolonic Wars.

I don't know if the usage for Sapper and other terms - gunner, bombardier, trooper, etc - is in official use or just generally accepted informally. The yellow pages previously used to use the Private rank designator.
