I think that the reason you won't find many colours laid up in RC Churches, is that for many years Roman Catholics in Britain were forbidden from holding public office and certainly discouraged from advancement in the upper echelons of society. I think the legal impediments disappeared around 1850 or so. Not surprisingly many of the county regiments in England and then later, their equivalents in the early Canadian Militia were founded by well respected members of their communities who were for the most Anglicans, Presbyterians and so on. The tradition continues that generally speaking, if a regiment has a padre, more often than not he is a protestant padre.

I've been enjoying this thread, and so I have one other question. Besides Guidons (Armoured), Standards and Flags (Infantry), the Guns (Artillery), does anyone know of other items which are held by various regiments or corps as their colours?
