There IS a way to please both camps.
Simply, at the "end" or "bottom" of any thread, offer the choice of "the next thread". Thus, the "indiscriminate" browsing reader can simply "scroll" through all the threads, without ever having to "back up" (which seems to be the common gripe, and one which I share).
This compromise solution has been used to great success by the Globe and Mail.
