I think it's possible to be a little more optimistic. Speaking in general, our generation has seen a lot of old hatreds die peacefully - 50 or 100 or 150 years ago, who would have thought that France and Germany would one day share a common currency? The Czechs and Slovaks decided amicably to split, and the breakdown of the Soviet Union, while certainly not having been smooth as glass, at least was done without foreign powers having to intervene.

Are you sure peace hasn't been kept in Cyprus? Peacekeeping only happens when both sides agree that they want peace to being with. Peacemaking is an entirely different proposition and shouldn't be discussed in the same breath.

I'm not so sure Canada isn't a united country now. Certainly some bigmouth politicians in Quebec would like to have their own country (perhaps they would even like to "cleanse" their new nation of Jews, ethnics and English speakers). But at present, we all spend the same undervalued loonie, fly the same flag (officially, if nothing else) and stand for the same national anthem at hockey games (albeit in different languages). I wouldn't start fretting about IRA-style violence anytime soon. I'm not so sure the man on the street in Quebec is ready for that.

Personally, if the ex-Yugos are stupid enough to want to kill each other, I say let them and stop getting good Canadians killed and injured there. You are correct when you say that there will be no peace unless they first desire it. I don't think that will happen in Canada anytime soon.
