Kosovo is simply a continuation of Belgrade's ethnic
cleansing policy. To date, the UN and Nato have been
ineffectual in dealing with the problem's in the Balkans.
But this should be no great surprise to anyone. Has the
UN in Cyprus brought peace? Or to Somalia? And the UN
has been in the Balkans since 92, and now 7 years later,
the war still goes on. Even if the UN or Nato were to
broker a peace agreement, how long would it last?
Hatreds in the Balkans go back hundreds of years and
the different ethnic groups there will cite acts of
violence that go back centuries or decades as
justification for violence they perform today. Friends
have become enemies by a war they did not want, and one
they can not stop.Is a lasting peace possible? I doubt
it. And before Canadians express surpise as why they
can't live together - we have only to look to the situ
in Canada between the French and the English. Canada
will never be a united country - we just havn't
resorted to the type of violence that the groups in the
Balkans have. Canada did have a brief period of
violence in the 70's, but that situation could be
considered mild even in comparison to strife in
Northern Ireland. It is my firm believe that every
nation is just a heartbeat and a step away from civil
war. However, I would hope that the majority of
Canadians will realize that we are extremely fortunate
to live here in this peaceful nation - where we enjoy
life. The danger of any war is that once started - it
may be impossible to stop. Kosovo is an example of a
war that may never conclude in a lasting peace - or one
that could take decades to achieve.
