The problem with most of the suggested alternatives (to military service) is that "national service" conscripts would be displacing paid workers. I see no value in providing free labour to construction firms, forestry firms, hospitals, etc at taxpayer's expense.

The "Royal Twenty Cent'ers" is not part of our history we should be seeking to repeat.
