You are certainly old enough to join on your own. Although I understand your reticence
about dealing with your parents.

There certainly are more reasons for you to join, than not. I think a lot of men regret not
joining the army to see if they can make it. I've met a fair number, you can see it in their
eyes, when you tell them your rank and your trade.

Do your parents believe everything they read? If they do, I genuinely feel sorry for them.
You'll never really know what something is, or is like until you go and see it for yourself.
I know now when I read a newspaper how little press people know about ANY particular
subject. "Here's a tank entering Tiananmen Square." It was an Armoured Personnel Carrier,
not a tank. "Two men armed with machine guns robbed a bank last night." I doubt that,
more than likely they were armed with semi-automatic rifles. The press report all things this way,
politics, economics, everything. They're not experts in any of these fields.

Bottom line is, it's your decision. Live your life.
