I'll try and answer your questions. It's been a while
since I was in the infantry.

Recce Platoon is part of an infantry battalion.
Platoons make up companies, which in turn make up
battalions. Reconnaisance is a skill. First you're trained
as a Service person, then an infantryman, then as a driver,
signaller, in mortars, recce, machine-gunner, and so on.

Recce Platoon is the forward looking edge of the battalion.
They can be asked to perform many tasks: the ones you
mentioned, plus selecting lines of advance, piqueting
enemy locations, calling in artillery fire, early warning,
finding obstacles, and finding the enemy.

Reconnaisance is not limited to the infantry. There
are also armoured recce units, and some artillerymen
and engineers perform in recce roles. Most Reserve
Armoured units are Armoured Recce.

If you live near a Reserve unit, and you're 17, you
should give it a try. If you like it and decide to,
you can transfer from the Reserve to the Regular Army
later, and you'll have some idea of what it's like,
plus you'll have some training and experience.
