The separate medal you mentioned is a Silver Memorial
Cross. If you inspect the centre closely, I suspect that
you will find a "GRV" for King George V. It was presented
to mothers and widows of military personnel killed
during wartime.

There is an excellent site on Canadian medals and
decorations by Veterans Affairs at
http://www.vac-acc.gc.ca/collections/cmdp/mainmenu/mainmenu.htm
You'll find the Silver Memorial Cross under "Memorial
Crosses".

Cheers,
Alan Woolley
