In reference to your last Michael, where you state "It's almost too bad we did such a good job in WWI and WWII... I can't agree more, the Canadian soldier went from poor second cousins to become the leaders in various aspects of modern warfare (artillery, patrolling, FIBUA/MOUT and CAS come to mind). But at what price?

Had there been a substantial well-trained standing army (relative to the population) at the beginning of each of these conflicts, I suspect that we would have had less causalities when our troops went into action. I suspect that we would have been more successful than we were in all theatres of war. The higher level of training for war usually means fewer problems - including needless deaths caused by hastily prepared and unseasoned troops.

We are potentially about to repeat history for a third time. It seems to me that the lessons of the past have yet again been ignored and politicians like Mr. Robinson glibly speak of sending our troops into a conflict for which our army is not properly prepared. More importantly, I don't believe for an instance that the Canadian public would support our soldiers when the fighting got dirty.

I think the problem is that Canadians don't see the army as part of their community and they don't understand that it will be their sons and daughters who will be at risk. Only after the first instance of mass causalities (and let's not kid ourselves here, the Serb military ain't boy scouts) will the public realize the nastiness of it all and demand that we bring the troops home.

The end state? - Wasted lives and the reliance upon others to clean up the world's act. Your military support is too late Svend!
