Well, in response to those who thought we were being "too helpful" to BCK, I would point out that the last time somebody made a similar request (i.e. wanted to run away and join the French Foreign Legion), the discussion thread was lively, to say the least. During the course of that discussion, several people pointed out that the Canadian Army is still the best choice for any young Canadian who is interested in a military career (or adventure).
However, sometimes "the indirect approach" is preferable to the "frontal assault".
From my point of view, as a former Recruiting Officer, I would not encourage any Canadian to travel halfway across the world to join a foreign army - it's bad enough that there are a lot of people who join the CF, only to realise that the military lifestyle is not form them - why make life even more difficult by learning this lesson in another country? (Nobody likes to come home "with their tail between their legs", especially after you've told your family and friends that you're leaving the country to start a new career - it can be an extremely humiliating experience when you fail.)
Case in point - the originator of this thread remarked something to the effect that "... he had no idea physical fitness was so important ..." (or something like that).
Can you imagine how humilating it would have been if he had travelled to the U.K. to learn that the hard way?
Hopefully, he will realise that he realised good advice from the Canadian Army War Diary, and will eventually also decide to explore his "Canadian horizons" (i.e. enlist in our Army), before going abroad.
Finally, I would agree with several remarks - even though people may laugh at the Canadian Forces from time to time, there are a lot more people who respect the Canadian Army, and still more who respect the Canadian SOLDIER!
