Personally, as a taxpayer, I don't mind if a soldier refers to his equipment/vehicle as "his" - to me, it signifies that he will take care of it (as if it really was his), as opposed to being careless with it.
From my experience and as confirmed to me by experienced transport NCOs, vehicles are better cared for when a driver is assigned to a vehicle - "pool" vehicles often become neglected, since many users assume that somebody else will do the first parades/maintenance.
Similarly for weapons, I've always noticed the extra care that is taken when a person knows that they will be the next firer - especially when "it counts" (heck - I've even seen people clean "THEIR" weapons when they were bored and had nothing better to do - rarely seen this happen with "communal" equipment).
So, there's my two cents worth.
Dileas.
