Michael, there was a Depression up till the end of 1939 but even so men were working. 80% of the enlistees in 1939 had jobs when they joined the army. I was surprised to learn that only about 30% of the members of some Militia units stepped forward to volunteer but on interviewing some them the reason they didn't step forward at first was because of their job and/or family. Many of those came forward later on after settling their affairs. Most of the volunteers came off the street. The point I'm trying to make is that most of the men in the Militia had a job before they joined the army.
How do you make the best of what you have? I don't know, I sometimes think that the people in Ottawa don't want you to.
