Interesting info...

The USMC has had extensive problems with corrosion on their LAV-25's, but that's mainly due to the saltwater/marine environment that their vehicles are exposed to for long periods of time. While I was a crewman in the Forces, I never noticed substantial corrosion on the vehicles, however I was never deployed to Bosnia where the vehicles have been in a field environment for a very extended period of time.

Here are a couple very candid and not so complementary websites developed by the 1st Tactical Studies Group (Airborne) out of Ft. Bragg NC on their view of the LAV.

The first site is WHEELED BOO-BOO OR SIGNAL TO HEAVYISTS TO LIGHTEN UP? at

http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/2116/wheeledbooboo.htm

The other site is LUST FOR FIERY DEATH: WHEELED LAVs?

http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/Quarters/2116/lavfiredeath.htm

I find these sites interesting, as they take a very complementary view of the M113A3, a platform which Canada has in the A2 version, which have an engine that is less powerful than A3 model, and lacks the added armor of A3 model. And especially interesting in that Canada is moving away from tracks in favor of the wheeled LAV.

While Canadian politicians will tend to favor the made in Canada LAV option, was there any thought of converting the M113 to an IFV role?

I saw an M113 in Gagetown in '96 inside of the compound of the CF R&D; shop(can't remember the exact official name of the group) and it had a Bradley (?) turret on it...I'd seen some pic's of this setup prior, in various CF publications during the 80's, and had been told that this setup was being experimented with to produce a possible IFV for the Forces. This was before the LAV III series came into being.

I'm curious as to whether much serious consideration was given into this project again with the advent of the M113 "stretch" MTVL program. Why not put a Delco/LAV-25 turret on the IFV version of the MTVL, decent applique armor package, and an automatic fire detection/suppression system and you've got yourself a very decent ALL-TERRAIN (no wheeled mobility restrictions) Infantry Fighting Vehicle that is probably significantly less expensive than a LAV-III APC, which has a huge silhouette, and is restricted in the terrain it can cover.

I'd seriously suggest checking out the 1st Tac. Studies Group website, if you have not done so already
