Re: the merchant Navy.

I must admit that I have nothing but admiration
for the sailors of the merchant Navy that went to
sea time and time again and could never fight
back. They were the targets and they knew it. The
sailors of the RN and the RCN knew that if they
took a torpedo .. that it was likely by accident
(and no hard feelings intended ... unterseeboot
kapitans being as judicious as were American and
British submariners in the second world war).

I have been in situations where I had to rely on
'protection parties' and it is not as comfortable
as carrying your own weapon and being keyed up to
fire back ... if and when fired upon. These guys
made more money than their Naval counterparts and
I have yet to meet the swabbie that didn't feel
that they deserved it. To denigrate their contrib-
ution to the war effort would be on a par to
arguing that every one who did not fire a weapon
in anger at the enemy was somehow less worthy of
recognition for their war effort. T'aint so folks
... and it would be a small price for a nation to
say thanks for some vital help in winning a war !
