By the way whether someone is "washed up" or disliked by their unit rarely has anything do do with their abilities or how much you can learn from them. Some of the best soldiers I know aren't well liked by their "unit" (which usually means a select few who really pull the strings) and often they are the ones to look to to really learn from. People who are skilled at their job often derive fear, criticism, and anger form those who aren't.
I don't know if this helps you, the other replies seem to make sense, remember, you are just an Officer cadet and when you look back at what you know now when you are finally leading troops you will be surprised at how "young" in every sense of the word you were.
