I was too embarrassed to mention it earlier, because I'm
an offr myself, but now that you've brought it up, it
was the offr second-language people that I was hanging
around with at St-Jean. The junior offrs who have no
previous military experience have to be excused for
thinking that life is pretty good and completely
care-free. I can't help but think that they're getting
an entirely unreal picture of what is to come. I
mentioned this to a friend of mine there and he
said, "Don't count on it. Some of them will be posted
straight to Borden after here and will get plenty more
of the same." I guess we're old-fashioned to want offrs
to dress and act appropriately for the Mess, and to have
Snr NCMs enforce rules of dress and decorum. I know
all of the Reserve units I've visited had far more
discipline. I think the problem is partly structural.
Some crse offrs and crse WOs are responsible for 5 or
10 crses. There is no standard for dress. The Code of
Service Discipline appears not to have a home there.
