People leave for various reasons. If one was to quit
to avoid being found guilty of a service offence then
that would perhaps be reason for a less-than-honourable
release from the Forces. Most releases are routine
administrative procedures and the released person is
given a favourable release. When you lose kit you should
report it right away to your chain -of-command so that
the item can be looked for, often someone else has found
it and is waiting to see if you'll come forward or not.
If not, finders, keepers. The procedure for what happens
will depend on what was lost. A lost rifle or binoculars
will cause quite a stir. For most items a sheet is filled
out and a recommendation is made to the Commanding Officer
as to whether you should be held responsible for the loss
in part or in full, or if it should be written off as a
training or operational loss.
