The DCM is the Distinguished Conduct Medal, awarded to NCOs, and second to the Victoria Cross. It is awarded only for bravery in battle. It is a very impressive medal, especially considering that the Military Medal was more commonly awarded for bravery in the field.

The 42nd Battalion was drawn from members of the Royal Highlanders of Canada, known also as the Black Watch. This regiment patterned itself after the Black Watch of the British Army, which was the oldest Highland Regiment in existence. The RHC actually contributed troops to several overseas CEF battalions, the 13th being another Black Watch battalion of note.
