Field Officer is a carry over from an old British term of "field grade" officer, meaning Captains and Majors.(Beats me what it really means, except that it might have something to do with service in the field rather than on the staff). Today, in the Army/CF the Junior Officers are all officers up to and including Captains. Majors to/including Colonels are Senior Officers. Brigadier Generals and above are General Officers, except in the Navy where it is traditional to refer to them as Flag Officers. Don.
