Svend Robinson is hardly my idol. He happens to be, by most
accounts, a very effective constituency politician and has an
admirable willingness to bring visibility to issues that would
probably otherwise be marginalized. He conducts his business
openly, including whatever activities others might deem
questionable. All of this is very refreshing to see in a
federal politician, since there are already enough backbench
pension-clocking potatoes in the house.
In short, he and I wouldn't see eye-to-eye politically, but I
think he serves an essential function as a voice for fringe
interests. It's unfortunate he's not prone to be favourable
to the more destructive necessities of the military, because
he'd probably be a very vocal advocate of our interests.
As to whether he invoked ministerial privilege to bring back a
Cuban boyfriend, who cares? If so, it would appear he hasn't
tried to hide it, unlike countless politicians who have
conducted themselves criminally in arenas ranging from
financial to sexual and are managing to comfortably live out
their ill-led lives sheltered by legions of lawyers.
