At that time, a lot of troops were training at Niagara-
on-the-Lake. As well, troops were used to safeguard the
Welland Ship Canal and the power canals.

You shoud try to get his miltiary records from the
National Archives in Ottawa. They have a web page at
http://www.archives.ca/www/svcs/english/PersonnelRecords.html
which explains how to do this.
